This week is Discovery Shark Week! When spending a week visiting Florida, many guests are apprehensive about swimming in the ocean, because of sharks that are known to haunt the waters along the coast. Since Jaws came out in the late 70's the ocean waters have never been quite the same to people swimming in the water. Walt Disney World has taken this fear, along with the fascination that surrounds sharks and has created an amazing experience, known as Shark Reef. If you love Discovery Shark Week, or you are into adventure, this Disney World shark experience is for you.
Disney's Typhoon Lagoon features a large tank that guests are allowed to jump in and snorkel across. The tank features a glorious coral reef, leopard and bonnethead sharks, stingrays and schools of beautiful tropical fish. Guests are sent in to the tank to start their exploration in groups of 15 - 20. Guests are not permitted to kick their legs while crossing the tank, and are encouraged to use life jackets if they are not a strong swimmer. The snorkel and mask are free of charge.
Guests of Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Shark Reef, who are not quite up for the adventure of swimming with the sharks or are traveling with a smaller child for the week, but would like to view them are invited to view the sharks from a sunken tanker. This allows guests to view the coral reef and all the sea life, including the sharks through portholes in the tanker. This is a Discovery Shark Week "up close" experience without getting wet!
For guests that would like a greater experience under the sea, Supplied Air Snorkeling systems or Scuba Diving Experiences are available for rent at Hammer Head Fred's Dive. There is an extra fee for these experiences, but this gets you really close to the sharks and tropical fish. This experience is perfect for pre-teens, teens and adults. An amazing adventure for Discovery Channel Shark Week!
